CHIPS Articles: Go Navy, Beat Army

Go Navy, Beat Army
By CHIPS Magazine - December 11, 2020
Just like the rest of America, the crew of the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is looking forward to the match between the Navy Midshipmen and the Army Black Knights to be played at Michie Stadium on the campus of West Point — instead of Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia — due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

The Army-Navy Game embodies the spirit of the inter-service rivalry of the United States Armed Forces. The first Army-Navy football game was held in 1890 at West Point and resulted in a 24-0 Navy victory. Philadelphia is typically selected as the game site, deemed as neutral territory, and situated approximately halfway between the campuses at Annapolis and West Point. This year’s game, scheduled for Dec. 12, marks the first time since World War II the Army-Navy game has been played on the campus of either service academy.

The Army-Navy football rivalry is particularly fierce and well-known throughout the 120 years the game series has been played, and the pandemic has done nothing to cool it off. Navy leads in the series 61-52.

Unlike past years, fan attendance will be limited to the Corps of Cadets and Brigade of Midshipmen, but never fear, they will undoubtedly make plenty of noise to cheer their teams on.

Navy is going into the game at 3-6 this season while Army stands at 7-2.
