CHIPS Articles: Advancing the DON Information Superiority Vision

Advancing the DON Information Superiority Vision
By Sharon Anderson - October-December 2020

As we head into the holiday season, COVID-19 is forcing us to adapt to dramatically different ways of celebrating. While we have all accepted the lifestyle changes of the last nine months, the holidays may bring a new level of stress to colleagues, family and friends, mental health professionals advise. If you see someone struggling, please reach out, the departments of the Navy and Defense have resources for assistance. You can visit, and to find out more.

On a positive note, DON CIO Aaron Weis complimented IT Teams across the Navy and Marine Corps for steadfastly pressing ahead with innovating, modernizing and delivering IT solutions in the kick-off of the first-ever virtual DON IT East Coast Conference, hosted on Microsoft CVR Teams Nov. 4 & 5. Weis said he continues to be impressed by the dedicated efforts and skills of the DON IT/cyber workforce. “It’s an exciting time to be part of the DON IT Community,” Weis said.

Conference sessions were designed to inform participants about ongoing work to advance the three strategic objectives of the Information Superiority Vision (ISV): Modernize DON IT Infrastructure, Innovate and Deploy New Capabilities, and Defend DON Information. The online forum proved an excellent platform for the DON CIO, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare and DON Deputy CIO (Navy) Vice Adm. Jeffrey E. Trussler, and Deputy Commandant Information and DON Deputy CIO (Marine Corps) Lt. Gen. Loretta Reynolds, other leaders and IT subject matter experts, to share their insights and guidance.

One of the advantages to holding the conference on the CVR platform is that each of the conference sessions were recorded and are available for viewing on demand from the DON CIO website.

If you were unable to participate in the conference, you can take advantage of this opportunity to learn about many ongoing IT and cyber efforts occurring across the department by visiting:

In October, the DON conducted a robust, coordinated response for National Cybersecurity Awareness Month with informative toolkits, articles and videos. The DON CIO, together with Vice Adm. Trussler and Lt. Gen. Reynolds, hosted a four-week cybersecurity awareness campaign designed to draw attention to the significant role cybersecurity plays in the operational readiness and lethality of Naval Forces.

While Cybersecurity Awareness Month has ended, #cybersecurity remains a DON CIO priority. U.S. adversaries don’t take a break, and neither can we. Remain vigilant, do your part and #BeCyberSmart.

On the home front, we continue to be grateful for our healthcare professionals and other loyal frontline workers who make our daily lives safer.

Until next time, I’ll echo a request from Mr. Weis, if you have an initiative that is advancing the DON Information Superiority Vision, we would love for you to tell your story in CHIPS!

Be strong! Stay well!
