National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week, Nov 12-17, 2018
Recruiting, upskilling and reskilling a national cybersecurity workforce
By CHIPS Magazine - October 31, 2018
The National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week (NCCAW) is a week-long campaign centered on increasing awareness about careers in cybersecurity and building momentum for increasing a national cybersecurity workforce to deepen America’s national security and promote economic prosperity.

NCCAW is held in association with the National Initiative for Cybersecurity (NICE), an initiative of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. NICE shares information from local, regional and national interest to inspire, educate and engage citizens to spur their interest in cybersecurity careers.

National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week takes place during November’s National Career Development Month, and each day of the week-long campaign provides an opportunity to learn about the contributions, innovations and opportunities that can be found by choosing a rewarding career in cybersecurity, according to a NIST release.

NCCAW emphasizes the demand and opportunities for job applicants in the field of cybersecurity showcasing the multiple career options within the field of cybersecurity and highlights the numerous pathways to enter the cybersecurity career field.

National Cybersecurity Career Awareness Week campaign is designed to advance the NICE Strategic Plan objective to inspire cybersecurity career awareness with students.

Importantly, NICE aims to create awareness in ongoing efforts to increase the participation of women, minorities, veterans, persons with disabilities, and other underrepresented populations in the cybersecurity workforce

Visit the NCCAW website to see the tools and resources you can use to help promote the week-long campaign in your efforts. For more information, visit nist.gov/nice/nccaw.

Travel is not required to participate! NCCAW offers two excellent free webinars that help address best strategies for building the cybersecurity workforce. See below for details.

It’s said that good people are hard to find and nowhere is this truer than in cybersecurity. A new employer approach is to provide upskilling and reskilling training for current employees so they can move into cybersecurity roles in the same organization. Employers are using AI and other tools to create internal workforce marketplaces and aligning partnerships with education providers to seamlessly move employees along new career pathways. Others are extending their reskilling efforts to find new talent outside their organization where just a skills update is required to qualify for their roles. This webinar will focus on upskilling and reskilling techniques from an educator and employer about their experiences.

Research shows that diverse teams are more productive and capable of greater innovation and impact. Attracting women to cybersecurity requires strategies for the messages, mediums and methods to reach candidates and efforts to tackle subconscious bias. This webinar will cover:

-- How to avoid the one thing that if you get wrong, guarantees your recruitment strategies will fail.

-- Why most attempts at outreach to women don’t lead to actual increases in enrollment in cybersecurity studies or employment —and what to do instead.

-- The true story of how five colleges and employers from around the country overcame these mistakes and successfully recruited more women and retained them too!

-- How your school/workplace can get on track to see these same kinds of results.
