On March 6, 2020, Department of Defense Instruction (DoDI) 5200.48, "Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)" was issued. This post will address the CUI program's impact on privacy markings ONLY and does not address other categories of CUI.

One purpose of the CUI program is to eliminate the many legacy markings that have been used over the years for various categories of information and replace them with one new CUI marking convention. Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is a category of CUI. See the attachment (i.e., use "download PDF" button above) for a summary on how to mark documents containing PII.

We are early in the implementation of CUI program requirements. As we gain experience, the lessons we learn will be used to update this guidance.

Visit the (CAC-enabled) SECNAV Portal to view a copy of the CUI Instruction, the latest DoD and DON policy, guidance, fact sheets, etc. These documents address the entire CUI program, not just privacy.
