Spectrum Supportability Policy for Mission-Critical Unlicensed Devices

Published, August 12, 2019

On Aug. 8, 2019, Under Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly signed "Spectrum Supportability Policy for Mission-Critical Unlicensed Devices," establishing Department of the Navy policy regarding the use of unlicensed Spectrum-Dependent Systems (SDS) or devices in mission critical applications/systems. If such use is pursued, certain spectrum supportability requirements must first be met.

A mission critical system is defined as: "A system whose operational effectiveness and operational suitability are essential to successful completion or to aggregate residual combat capability. If this system fails, the mission likely will not be completed. Such a system can be an auxiliary or supporting system as well as a primary mission system."
