Growing, Sustaining the Nation’s Cybersecurity Workforce
By CHIPS Magazine - July 11, 2017
The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is seeking Information, ideas, and views about the scope and sufficiency of efforts to educate and train the nation’s workforce to meet current and future private and public sector cybersecurity needs.

A Request for Information, to be published in the Federal Register on July 12, is part of NIST’s effort (on behalf of the Department of Commerce and NIST) with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and several other federal departments and agencies to fulfill a May 11, 2017, executive order issued by President Trump on strengthening cybersecurity.

On May 11, 2017, the President of the United States issued the Executive Order on Strengthening the Cybersecurity of Federal Networks and Critical Infrastructure. In part, the order states that it is the policy of the United States “to support the growth and sustainment of a workforce that is skilled in cybersecurity and related fields as the foundation for achieving our objectives in cyberspace.”

Consequently, the Secretary of Commerce and Secretary of Homeland Security are directed to:

-- “assess the scope and sufficiency of efforts to educate and train the American cybersecurity workforce of the future, including cybersecurity-related education curricula, training, and apprenticeship programs, from primary through higher education”; and

-- “provide a report to the President with findings and recommendations regarding how to support the growth and sustainment of the Nation's cybersecurity workforce in both the public and private sectors.”

The order calls for a report to the President with findings and recommendations regarding how to support the growth and sustainment of the nation's cybersecurity workforce in both the public and private sectors.

Comments will be due August 2, 2017. For details, see: https://www.nist.gov/itl/applied-cybersecurity/nice/request-information.
