The Department of Navy Chief Information Officer (DON CIO) Aaron Weis, together with the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare and DON Deputy CIO (Navy) Vice Adm. Jeffrey E. Trussler, and Deputy Commandant Information and DON Deputy CIO (Marine Corps) Lt. Gen. Loretta Reynolds, hosted a four-week cybersecurity awareness campaign during October designed to draw attention to the significant part cybersecurity plays in the operational readiness of the Department.

The campaign highlighted the fundamental tenets of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and featured a comprehensive informational thrust to emphasize cybersecurity as mission-critical for the DON.

The DON CIO website hosted a weekly theme during the awareness campaign and key actions included virtual summits and panel discussions, website updates, informational emails, and CHIPS articles.

The Week 1 topic discussion — “If You Connect It, Protect It” — opened with DON CIO Aaron Weis, Vice Adm. Jeff Trussler, and Lt. Gen. Lori Reynolds in a video discussion. Leaders remarked that cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility, every day. Mr. Weis said cybersecurity underlines the objectives of the DON Information Superiority Vision to Modernize, Innovate and Defend the Department’s IT infrastructure. The discussion is available on DVIDS.

A special video featuring the DoD Principal Deputy CIO John Sherman highlighted the importance of attention to cybersecurity in the Pentagon, on base, and at home. The video can be found here.

The DON CIO closed the CSAM campaign with this Week 4 topic: “The Future of Connected Devices.” A strategic highlight of this week featured a panel discussion about the future of the DON IT infrastructure and described a future, both in the Navy and at home, that will be increasingly connected, emphasizing that cybersecurity will become even more important in this globally linked IT environment.

Panelists included the Chiefs of the four directorates: Jane Rathbun, DON Chief Technology Officer and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy Information Warfare and Enterprise Services; Tom Sasala, DON Chief Data Officer; Mike Galbraith, DON Chief Digital Innovation Officer; and Christopher Cleary, DON Information Security Officer. The panel was moderated by Tony Plater, Director, Cybersecurity and Privacy in the Office of the Chief Information Security Officer, Department of Navy Chief Information Officer. The leadership panel can be found on DVIDS.

While Cybersecurity Awareness Month has ended, #cybersecurity remains a DON CIO priority. Our adversaries don’t take a break, and neither can we. Remain vigilant, do your part and #BeCyberSmart.
