CHIPS Articles: Modernize, Innovate, Defend

Modernize, Innovate, Defend
By Sharon Anderson - January-March 2020
It’s a pleasure to present the full DON CIO leadership team with Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer, Aaron Weis in the lead. You may recall Mr. Weis joined the DON senior executive team in late September as the CIO and Principal Staff Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy for information management, digital, data and cyber strategy. Because of vulnerabilities in the department’s cyber posture revealed in the Secretary of the Navy Cybersecurity Readiness Review, the department restructured the office of the DON CIO to ensure clear lines of accountability and unity of command.

Weis leads a robust team of four cyber experts, each leading a new directorate. They have been working since October in their respective roles on three lines of effort set by Weis: defend, innovate and modernize DON networks.

In this edition, we are excited to feature interviews with Mr. Weis and each of the four officials reporting to him, beginning with Chief Technology Officer (who is also the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Information Warfare & Enterprise Services) Jane Rathbun, Chief Data Officer Thomas Sasala, Chief Digital Innovation Officer Mike Galbraith and Chief Information Security Officer Christopher Cleary.

We are definitely feeling the winds of cyber change with a new format announced for the DON IT conferences. Mr. Weis emphasized that he is eager to meet the IT/cyber workforce and hopes to engage with attendees in a meaningful discussion. The new DON CIO leadership team is eager to engage with with the Navy-Marine Corps team as well. Please join us!

The DON IT Conference, West Coast has been approved for March 2-3, 2020, at the San Diego Convention Center, and the DON IT Conference, East Coast has been approved for May 11-13, 2020 at the Hilton Norfolk The Main.

The conferences are held in fleet concentration areas on the West and East coasts each year to minimize cross-country travel by participants. Further, TDY registration at each conference is limited.

The information presented at the East and West Coast conferences is essentially the same, and both conference venues are conducive to learning and collaboration and have been well-received by participants. Additionally, the DON IM/IT Excellence Awards are presented on both coasts to minimize travel expenses for awardees.

If possible, please register for the conference closest to your duty station.
