By CHIPS Magazine - November 20, 2019
The Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) is designated as a federal cyber center and Department of Defense center of excellence, and serves as the operational focal point for the Defense Industrial Base Cybersecurity Program.

DC3’s mission is to deliver superior digital and multimedia (D/MM) forensic services, cyber technical training, vulnerability sharing, technical solutions development, and cyber analysis within the following DoD mission areas: cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection, law enforcement and counterintelligence, document and media exploitation, and counterterrorism, according to information on its website.

An arm of the DC3, the DC3 Cyber Training Academy (CTA), provides in-residence and online training to DoD elements that protect DoD information systems from unauthorized use, criminal, fraudulent, and foreign intelligence activities.

The DC3 Cyber Training Academy curriculum offers courses organized into specialty areas. Since its founding in 1998, the Academy has recorded more than 19,000 student enrollments in various courses.

Key curriculum topics include computer search and seizure; network intrusions; digital forensics; basic and advanced forensic examination; and online undercover techniques.

The DC3 Cyber Training Academy confers DoD certifications in digital media collection, digital forensic examination, and cybercrime investigation.

The Council on Occupational Education (COE), a national organization that supports quality in career and technical education, accredits the DC3 Cyber Training Academy. The DC3 Cyber Training Academy has also received college credit recommendations for several courses from the American Council on Education (ACE), the major national coordinating body for postsecondary education.

The DC3 Cyber Training Academy is the lead organization for the National Center for Digital Forensics and Academic Excellence (CDFAE) program, collaborating with colleges, universities, and institutions of higher learning to establish and promote a consistent digital forensics core curriculum nationally.
