SAN DIEGO — Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) is delighted to announce Dr. Joanna Nina Ptasinski has been elected as a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Following her undergraduate career at SDSU where her senior design project involved the use of SSC Pacific’s microfabrication facilities to investigate the oxide quality of metaloxide-semiconductor capacitors, Ptasinski joined SSC Pacific as a civil servant in 2002. Her research has spanned nanotechnology, silicon photonics, plasmonic devices, quantum technology and advanced network architectures. In 2017, she was selected to lead SSC Pacific’s Cryogenic Electronics and Quantum Research Branch where she leads a group of 19 scientists and engineers developing advanced technologies in support of National defense.

In her 16 years at SSC Pacific, Ptasinski’s innovation and keen technical insights have been applied to development of new systems to ensure the technological advantage of the U.S. Navy. She has over 25 publications, presentations or technical reports including two book chapters and six peer-reviewed journal articles. She is also a member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), Optical Society of America (OSA), American Physical Society (APS), National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) and Women In Defense (WID).

Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Chief Technology Officer Dr. Stephen Russel says the honor recognizes the significance of the work conducted at the lab. “Recognition by the NAI of our Senior Members demonstrates the level of innovation exhibited by the scientists and engineers at our Center,” Russell said. “We are truly leaders in developing the next generation information warfare capabilities in support of our Navy and Nation.”

SSC Pacific's mission: To conduct research, development, engineering, and support of integrated command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, cyber, and space systems across all warfighting domains, and to rapidly prototype, conduct test and evaluation, and provide acquisition, installation, and in-service engineering support. www.spawar.navy.mil/pacific
