Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment (USD(A&S)) Ellen Lord announced the appointment of Jeff Boleng as Special Assistant for Software Acquisition.
In this role, effective April 16, 2018, Mr. Boleng will serve as a key member of the Under Secretary’s executive leadership team, providing strategic focus and overall policy guidance on all matters of defense software acquisition, according to Defense Department release.
Boleng will formulate the Department’s software acquisition strategy, advise executive leadership on the latest best practices in commercial software development, support the enterprise to build a team of top-tier software engineers, and work to develop modern software skills in the acquisition workforce.
Boleng has extensive of experience across the DoD and the private sector. Prior to joining DoD, Boleng served as the chief technology officer (acting) and deputy chief technology officer at Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute. Before that, Boleng served more than 21 years in the U.S. Air Force as a cyberspace operations officer and software engineer. In his last assignment with the Air Force, Boleng served as the deputy department head, Department of Computer Science at the United States Air Force Academy.
Boleng received a Doctor of Philosophy degree and a Master of Science degree in Mathematical and Computer Sciences from the Colorado School of Mines. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the United States Air Force Academy.
