Connecting Technology Fall 2000
By Sharon Anderson - January-March 2001
Connecting Technology (CT) Fall 2000, sponsored by the Department of the Navy Chief Information Office (DON CIO) and the DON-IT Umbrella Program, is a vital and influential information technology forum. The semiannual symposium was held at the Town & Country Resort in San Diego — a perfect setting for networking with colleagues and technology sharing.

More than 70 IT vendors displayed the latest and best of an impressive array of technology tools. Our thanks to the exhibitors, who participated in CT. They were well-versed in the features of their products, and the buzz between exhibitors and the more than 1,100 guests in the exhibition hall was very exciting.

Special thanks to our attendees, their enthusiastic participation in Fall 2000 CT made it the best ever!

The CT symposium was composed of morning sessions featuring distinguished speakers focusing on DON IT policy issues such as the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI), Global Information Grid, information assurance, and more.

A sampling of speakers included: retired Adm. Archie Clemins, President & Chief Operating Office, Bot, Inc.; Amir Hartman, Executive Managing Director, Internet Strategies, Cisco Systems; Debra Filippi, Deputy Director C4/Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO), HQ Marine Corps; Dave Wennergren, Deputy CIO for E-Business and Security; and Vice Adm. Casey Coane, Deputy Director Reserve Program CNO N6; James Ward, head, Command & Control Systems, SPAWARSYSCEN Charleston; and David Litchfield Deputy PEO-IT, NMCI Services.

Attendees could select from one of four excellent tracks offered for the afternoon sessions. Track themes included: People & Processing, Technology Infusion, Tech Brief and Training.

Knowledge Management to achieve Knowledge Superiority for the warfighter was the common theme for the speakers' remarks in the general sessions and the afternoon tracks.

An e-Government Roundtable included prominent panel members from the DON and the U.S. Coast Guard. Ms. Alex Bennet, Deputy CIO for Enterprise Integration; Ron Turner, Deputy CIO for Infrastructure, Systems and Technology; Dave Wennergren, Vice. Adm. Casey Coane, Deputy Director Reserve Program CNO N6; Ms. Debra Filippi; and Capt. Charles Williams, C4ISR/D11/PACAREA USCG, led an informative question and answer period with lively audience participation.

Panel members also presented e-Government Awards sponsored by the DON CIO. The awards were given to DON teams for outstanding Knowledge Management (KM) and e-Business initiatives.
