Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Corona designed, developed, installed, and demonstrated a Yard Patrol craft Replay System (YPRS) to enhance the effectiveness of live ship-handling events during U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) midshipmen training.

YPRS delivers the capability to collect various ship-handling and maneuvering data and then display it graphically. With this capability, USNA instructors possess a tool to efficiently record and replay ship-handling maneuvers during a training voyage as well as during specific training sessions such as man-overboard, pier landings, anchoring, and tactical maneuvering. With the YPRS, instructors can quickly prepare an accurate debriefing to students, enhancing the value of their learning experience.

Prior to the development and implementation of YPRS, capability to provide rapid reconstruction and debriefing of live ship-handling events during USNA midshipmen training did not exist. This prohibitive gap limited the value of the training and student experience. Corona engineers developed the YPRS to provide rapid replay of ship-handling events to support the Plan, Brief, Execute, Debrief process.

In October 2016, the team installed YPRS on six YP crafts and demonstrated it to USNA instructors as well as the NAVSEA PMS329 and PMS339 program offices. The YPRS consists of a laptop computer, voice recorder, and networking connections to capture and archive navigational, engineering, and voice data. The system uses a two or three dimensional, simulation display tool called SIMDIS (a tool developed by U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL)). SIMDIS depicts the YP crafts on a geographic maritime plot displaying the various data including synchronized audio voice commands, video of the bridge environment, machinery control data, environmental data and ground truth.

By showing the trainer and trainees the complete picture of events, the NSWC Corona-developed YPRS significantly enhances the Navy's training feedback value. With the YPRS, instructors can quickly prepare an accurate debriefing while both students and instructors can see exactly how various input and forces affect a ship's movement, which allows them to clearly view the impact of their ship-handling actions. This results in improved seamanship and navigation training at the USNA which, in turn, will result in better trained midshipmen who will be equipped with an enhanced understanding of ship-handling fundamentals.

YPRS has applicability not only in USNA YP Craft navigation and seamanship training but also in the U.S. Navy fleet operations and training. If extended to fleet operations, the YPRS can enable fleet trainers to provide more effective debriefings.

In addition, the YPRS can be used to capture mission event audio, ship (e.g. speed, heading, etc.), video, and SIMDIS data for reconstructive analysis. Additionally, and more importantly, it will enhance ship-handling training provided by ships' commanding officers and training officers. The information and experience gained by using the YPRS will improve ship training events, enhance debriefings after actual operational seamanship and navigation maneuvers, and will reduce navigation incidents and collisions.
