Virtual Reality Coming to "Next Generation Naval Logistics" Exhibit at Sea-Air-Space

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Suddenly you're in the cockpit of a fighter jet catapulting off an aircraft carrier for a training mission, with a panoramic view of the sky, the ocean, and the pilot, depending on which direction you turn your head.

The next minute you're standing on the bridge of a modern warship, witnessing the commanding officer interacting with his crew. Moments later, you're on a carrier flight deck at sea watching flight operations underway.

OPNAV N45's Energy Warrior production team recently visited USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) to capture a compelling virtual reality/360 degree viewing experience during a three-day training mission. The result was a short interactive film entitled "Disrupt the Future," which will premiere at the 2017 Sea-Air-Space Symposium at the National Harbor in Maryland, April 3-5.

The film captures the passion and professionalism aboard Carl Vinson and highlights the innovation of the brave Sailors who defend our nation at sea. Their hard work and dedication is truly awe-inspiring, warfighters and civilians alike will appreciate this unique opportunity to "step inside their shoes."

Virtual reality (VR)/360 video is an emerging format that creates an immersive, visceral experience that cuts through the over-saturated world of online visual content. A report from Business Insider suggests that VR has the potential to elicit longer engagement periods and a much higher emotional response than traditional two-dimensional video. No two users' experiences with 360 video will ever be the same, as exploring the footage interactively from multiple angles will always provide a unique viewing experience.

The VR/360 simulation will be featured at the Next Generation Naval Logistics booth (#1453). The exhibit's theme is "Toughness - Reach - Responsiveness" (TR2), focusing on innovative logistical solutions that ensure the Navy remains agile, lethal and effective in the complex modern-threat environment.

In addition to VR, the booth will showcase additive manufacturing projects, Naval Sea Systems Command's GENISYS system for shipboard use, and 3D modeling technology that supports efficient acquisition for shore facilities.

USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) is the U.S. Navy's third Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, commissioned in March 1982. Named after Congressman Carl Vinson of Georgia in recognition of his many naval contributions, the ship has taken part in numerous key engagement deployments including Operation Desert Strike, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Southern Watch, and Operation Enduring Freedom. In addition, Osama Bin Laden's body was buried at sea from the deck of USS Carl Vinson in 2011. USS Carl Vinson is homeported in San Diego.
