Women’s History Month: Female leadership at Navy’s Warfare Systems Center is making news
By Patric Petrie, Lead Writer, SSC Pacific Public Affairs Office - March 30, 2017
SAN DIEGO — The Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) is a low profile member of an exclusive team of research labs that comprise the Department of Defense’s biggest brain trust.

The research conducted here focuses not just on the Navy of today, but on the Navy of tomorrow, and the Navy of the future. Think far enough in the future, and you’ll be retired before some of these technologies come to fruition.

But did you realize that at the helm of the effort to provide the Department of Defense with rapidly developed warfighting capabilities, from seabed to space, sit two women in leadership roles?

Commanding Officer Capt. Gisele Bonitz is an active-duty Navy captain, and native of Nicaragua, with a breadth of knowledge of space systems, information technology and cyber; Executive Director Carmela Keeney is a engineer with more than 30 years of experience providing the Navy with technical solutions in an ever more complicated and ever changing technical world.

Together, they are the first female leadership team in the U.S. Naval laboratory system, and possibly the Department of Defense research labs, and they are steering a course of discovery and innovation for the groundbreaking work of SSC Pacific's 77-year-old lab which today has a team of more than 4,800 civilian and military personnel, more than 2,100 support contractors, and a budget of more than $2.5 billion.

Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific is the nation's only full spectrum C4ISR (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) laboratory providing research, development, acquisition, test and evaluation and full life-cycle support across systems that integrate the military's sensors, networks, command and control, and weapons into a fully netted combat force with full spectrum dominance.
