First CIO Blogger, Really?
Published, February 1, 2008
I must say I was a bit surprised to find out that I am the first CIO to have a blog, according to Chris Dorobek of Federal Computer Week. Or that would be sort of, as he rightly pointed out in his FCW Insider column published January 25. By next month, my blog will have the look and feel of a “real” blog.

However, I am bound by departmental policy that specifically prohibits the automatic posting of information by those not explicitly authorized to do so on DON web sites. My staff is working to determine if there is an amicable solution. In the short term, we plan to accept and post public comments, but that will require a vetting process that we are hammering out.

This is the reality of working in the public sector.

This is not to say you cannot send me a comment now. In fact, I would love to hear from you. For now, you’ll just have to send comments via the web site manager.

As I explained to Chris, my intention with this blog is to open up a straightforward and public dialogue with DON personnel, and specifically the brave Sailors and Marines who are out on the front lines protecting this country, so that I can fully understand what their IT needs are. It is essential that they have what they need to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. So please do send me your comments about the blog posts or about topics you would like me to address in future posts.

And as for the podcasts now available on the new web site that Chris was unable to access, they are working. You just have to double-click the play button, but perhaps that’s a slight adjustment we need to make. If you experience any problems, please let us know.

Our New Web Site
Published, January 17, 2008
Welcome. I see you have discovered our newly redesigned DON CIO web site. I hope that you find it easier to navigate to the information you require.

We are billing it as The DON IT Resource – and we mean it to be just that. We want this web site to be the first place DON personnel turn to for information on IT, be it the latest policy instruction, conference, news article or tool. I also hope you will use it to contact us to ask questions about or provide feedback on the many initiatives in which we are involved.

We have updated the look, feel, organization and underlying technology of the site to help you find the information you are looking for faster and discover related information you may not have been aware of. Look for additional rich media, RSS feeds and blogging soon as a multifaceted approach to getting information out to you no matter where you may be seated within the Department. Such vehicles also provide the opportunity for us to explain the thinking behind our policy decisions and give you the opportunity to weigh in.

During my tenure as DON CIO, my goal is to connect this policy office to the men and women at the tip of the spear who bravely defend this great nation of ours. We are here to support you but we need your feedback to ensure that we focus on the things that will help you do your job. You must be part of the conversation, and this web site is our conduit.

So take a few minutes to have a look around and let us know what you think.
