Knowledge Management/Information Sharing

The DON CIO promotes and assists in advancing knowledge management implementation within the Department, which involves supporting and promoting a community of practice, conducting semi-annual meetings and providing tools to facilitate learning organizations.
Knowledge management is the integration of people and processes, enabled by technology, to facilitate the exchange of operationally relevant information and expertise to increase performance. KM learning processes enables the application of knowledge and better practices, as they emerge, to existing challenges.
From a slightly different perspective, the 2008-2009 DoD IM/IT Strategic Plan states: "Knowledge management, the systematic process of discovering, selecting, organizing, distilling, sharing, developing and using information, will provide the basis from which decisions are made and actions are taken."
Information sharing is making information available to participants (people, processes or systems). It includes the cultural, managerial and technical behaviors by which one participant leverages information held or created by another.
